Why Are There Metal Shavings in My Car’s Power Steering Fluid?

If you see metal shavings in your car’s power steering fluid, we hate to

say it-the power steering pump is disintegrating. However, we can replace the old pump with a new one and get you back on the road. The power steering pump generally lasts about 100,000 miles, after which it can start to malfunction and dissolve. Aside from the silver flakes in the red power steering fluid, you may also have one or more of the following problems. These are signs that your car needs a new steering pump.

Groaning or Moaning Noises

Your steering system may start to groan when you turn the steering wheel if the pump needs to be replaced. You may hear this groaning noise get louder as you turn the steering wheel. The sound may also be a light moan or a loud squeal. It depends on the extent of the pump’s damage. The bottom line is you do not want to hear any sound when you steer your automobile.

A Resistant Steering Wheel

You may also start to have difficulty turning the steering wheel. What was an easy action with one hand turned into a cranking action with both hands. If you have driven an automobile with manual steering, it will feel like this. This can signal that the steering pump no longer circulates the steering fluid.

Unresponsiveness to the Turns

Unfortunately, there can also be a dangerous sign that your vehicle needs a new power steering pump. You may turn the wheel, and the automobile may not respond. This can leave you with an uncontrollable car, SUV, or truck. This is a rare effect of a bad pump, but it has been known to happen. If you cannot steer your vehicle, pull over – if you can – and call for a tow to bring you to our shop.

The pump may start to leak if it is too old. This will leave you with red fluid spots (or puddles) on the garage floor. You can see if the fluid is too low by looking at the level in the reservoir. It will be identified on the cap, making it easy to find in your engine.
