Is It OK To Drive On Empty?

We’ve all had those days, and you know exactly which ones we are referring to. Traffic this morning made getting to work a slog, your day at the office was long and stressful, and somehow the traffic on the way home is even worse. You look down and notice your gas light is activated, indicating that you need to stop and fill up. After the day you’ve had, that is the last thing you want to do, so you drive the rest of the way home and decide to worry about it in the morning. But is this really a good idea?

You Could Run Out Of Gas

When you drive on empty, eventually, you are going to run out of gas. At that point, you either have a long, humiliating walk to a service station ahead, or you had better hope your cell is charged enough to make that call to AAA or a tow truck. Either way, it is going to be a huge ordeal, so avoid this by simply getting gas when your car needs it.

Your Fuel Pump Will Thank You

Your car’s fuel pump is designed to be submerged in gasoline, so when you drive on empty, you are risking fuel pump misfires and malfunctions. Any auto repair technician will tell you that fuel pump repair or replacement is complicated and expensive, so always try to keep at least ¼ of a tank of gas in your car.

Make An Appointment

If you worry that long-term driving on low fuel has damaged your fuel pump, or you simply want us to take a look, make an appointment today. In the meantime, though, it doesn’t matter how bad your day was. For the health of your vehicle, always make sure to get gas when you need it.
